The legal framework of the profession
Is hiring a private detective legal in France?
Yes. The profession of private investigator is governed by article L621-1 of the French Internal Security Code and supervised by the CNAPS (Ministry of the Interior). Prometheus operates under licence AUT-075-2116-12-06-20170618953.
What are you not allowed to do?
Unlawful GPS tracking, wiretapping, hacking a phone or mailbox, entering a home: these methods are illegal and we refuse them. Unfairly obtained evidence would be dismissed by the judge and expose you criminally.
How can I verify your CNAPS licence?
The licence can be checked in real time on the CNAPS online service (teleservices-cnaps.interieur.gouv.fr). Our number appears at the bottom of every page.

The value of our reports
Are your reports admissible in French courts?
Yes. A private investigation report has been a lawful means of evidence since the Court of Cassation ruling of 7 November 1962, provided it is obtained fairly and proportionately. The judge weighs it freely.
Can adultery evidence be used in a divorce?
Yes. Adultery remains a civil fault (article 242 of the French Civil Code): a report establishing an affair can support a fault-based divorce and weigh on its financial consequences.
Can the detective testify in court?
Yes. The investigator who made the observations can attest in writing and be heard if the judge deems it useful, reinforcing the probative force of the report.
